Quinton Byfield Surge: Kings Forward Heating Up

The Sideline Editorial··3 min read

Quinton Byfield, the Los Angeles Kings' forward, is on a hot streak, registering 11 points in his last 10 games, including seven goals and four assists. His performance comes at a crucial time as the Kings fight for a playoff spot.

Quinton Byfield Surge: Kings Forward Heating Up

Quinton Byfield, the Kings' second overall pick in 2020, has seven goals and four assists in his last 10 games. The 23-year-old center is finding his stride as Los Angeles battles for a Western Conference playoff berth.

Byfield's recent surge includes five multi-point efforts. This contrasts sharply with earlier stretches this season, including a 10-game pointless drought and a December where he managed just two points in 12 games.

For a player carrying the weight of the No. 2 overall selection, Byfield's career has been a mixed bag. He has appeared in 333 career games, becoming a regular in the Kings lineup over the past four seasons. While he's eclipsed 50 points twice, his 44 points (20 goals, 24 assists) in 73 games this season put him on the cusp of a third such year. He needs six points in the final six games to hit that mark.

Overtime Heroics

Byfield’s play reached a crescendo in the Kings’ recent 7-6 overtime victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs. His second goal of the night sealed the win, described as perhaps the most important goal of the season. It was also the Kings' 31st overtime game of the season.

Interim Head Coach DJ Smith praised the line of Alex Laferriere, Byfield, and Trevor Moore. Smith noted, "That line has been really good. Q gets two tonight. I mean, when your top two lines score like that, typically you win that game going away, you just don't like the way you won." Smith quoted Lou Lamoriello saying, "You never critique a win.""

Playoff Implications

The Kings' record improved to 31-26-19 thanks to Byfield's heroics. They are now tied with the Nashville Predators (36-31-9) for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference, both teams holding 81 points. The Sharks, Blues, and Jets are also in the mix. The next six games will be critical for Byfield and the Kings' playoff aspirations.

Anze Kopitar's Successor?

Entering the season, expectations were high that Byfield would begin to assert himself as the heir apparent to Anze Kopitar as the Kings’ top line center. While it remains to be seen if he can fully assume that role, his current form provides a glimpse of his potential. If he continues this streak into the playoffs, it could become a more regular occurrence next season.

Byfield’s performance over the next six games will determine if he can lead the Kings into the postseason and reshape the narrative of his 2025-26 season.
